中国名人录
《中国名人录》（英语：Who's Who in China），是《密勒氏评论报》（Millard's Review）与更名后的《中国每周评论》（The China Weekly Review）于1918－1950年间出版的名人录系列作，九度更新紧贴时局，图文并茂介绍中华民国政商人士及专业精英，系研究民国史的外文参考书。系列作并非旨在囊括一切名人，而是尽可能令世界认识中国人。[1]
时代背景
[编辑]1917年6月9日，美国记者汤姆斯·密勒（T. F. Millard）在上海创刊《密勒氏评论报》，读者主要是在华外侨、中国政界和知识分子，海外读者亦多，在美国、欧洲和中国有一定的影响力[2]。1919年，《密勒氏评论报》由约翰·比尔·鲍威尔（John Bill Powell）接管，英文名改为《中国每周评论》，其子约翰·威廉·鲍威尔（John W. Powell）随后继任主编。[3]。
编纂取材
[编辑]鲍威尔父子的信息来自北京和天津的外国人，以及在该报做的调查问卷，受访者包括商界和科学界，还采访了清华学校校友及从美国归国的人士[4]。
在1925年之前，《中国每周评论》已经出版两次《中国名人录》，但主编鲍威尔父子仍然希望继续更新，以囊括最新的中国国内人物变化。1924年9月的第二次直奉战争，直接促使了鲍威尔父子进行第三次改版的延期和出版[1]。
1931年，日军入侵中国东北和上海，所以鲍威尔父子在1933年进行了第四版的补充版，囊括了当时抵抗日军的国共军事将领、以及一些著名的佛教僧侣[5]。
