NGC 4656/57位于猎犬座，距离地球3,000万光年，是边缘高度翘曲[3]的棒旋星系[4]。这个星系有时被称为“曲棍球棒星系”或“撬棍星系”。其不寻常的形状被认为是由于NGC 4656、NGC 4631和NGC 4627之间的相互作用造成的[5]。这些星系属于NGC 4631星系群。
2005年3月21日，在NGC 4656/57中发现了一个“超级爆发”中的亮蓝变星[6]。
