NGC 4550是一个位于室女座的棒状透镜星系，可以用业余望远镜看到。NGC 4550距离银河系5000万光年（15.5兆秒差距），是室女座星系团的成员[2]。
物理
[编辑]尽管NGC 4550不是室女座星系团中最亮的星系之一，但这个星系却引人注目，因为NGC 4550是少数几个大部分恒星都以与其他恒星相反的方向围绕星系中心旋转的星系之一[3][4]。
美国天文学家薇拉·鲁宾关于这个星系的研究文章写道：“我从对NGC 4550的观察中发现，在这个星系中，一半的恒星顺时针旋转，另一半恒星逆时针旋转，两个系统混合在一起。这一观察要求许多天文学家修改他们测量速度的方式，因为当时的电脑还不具备处理这种复杂性的能力。”
NGC 4550的中心也显示出少量的分子氢和星际尘埃，后者集中在围绕其核心的圆盘中[5]，那里正在形成恒星，尽管过程非常温和[6]。
