《夜》(意第绪语:Un di Velt Hot Geshvign)是埃利·维瑟尔取材自本身经历的著作,记述他和父亲施罗摩在1944年至1945年间,二次大战接近尾声、犹太人大屠杀的极端时期,被送往纳粹德国奥斯威辛和布痕瓦尔德集中营的种种际遇。
内容概要
[编辑]在短短逾百页稀少、片段的叙述中,维瑟尔以他的单纯对比大屠杀的残酷骇人,写下关于上帝已死及对人性渐长的厌恶,呈现了集中营内父子关系的逆转:父亲干瘪、孱弱,而他成了他父亲的照顾者,满腹憎恨而愤世。“但愿我能摆脱这累赘……我紧接地为自己感到羞耻,永远感到羞耻。”在《夜》中,一切事物都是反转的,所有价值都已泯灭。“这里没有父亲、没有兄弟、没有朋友,”一个囚监[1]曾对维瑟尔说:“人人只为自己而生而死。”
1945年4月,当美军终于抵达、解放布痕瓦尔德集中营时,维瑟尔只有十六岁,他的父亲在布痕瓦尔集中营染上痢疾,过世于1月28日。维瑟尔离开集中营后,他已对上帝和人类失去信任,闭口不提他的任何经历,只寄望时间能让他认清世界。沉默了十年后的1954年,他以意第绪语写了一份865页的手稿,1955年于布宜诺斯艾利斯发表,出版为《而世界依然缄默》(Un di Velt Hot Geshvign)一书。同年5月被法国小说家弗朗索瓦·莫里亚克说服,答应为更广大的读者而书。
然而,即使有莫里亚克背书,维瑟尔的作品仍一再被出版社退稿:理由是它太“病态”,不会有人想了解当年的历史。1958年,经过莫里亚克一再奔走,长178页的《夜》终于由子夜出版社在法国付梓,并于1960年9月在美国出版了116页的英语版本。五十年后,它和普利摩·李维的《如果这是一个人》及安妮·法兰克的《安妮的日记》齐名,并列为犹太大屠杀的经典作品。
