威廉·達文南特爵士（Sir William Davenant；1606年3月3日受洗-1668年4月7日）是一位英格蘭詩人、劇作家，是英格蘭文藝復興戲劇中的重要人物。
生平
[編輯]他出生於英格蘭牛津，父親約翰是牛津市長。其教父據說是莎士比亞[1]，甚至有人謠傳他就是莎士比亞的兒子[2]。1620年左右，他進入牛津大學林肯學院讀書，但最終肄業。1630年他在倫敦感染梅毒，1632年短暫離開倫敦療養[3]。梅毒導致他鼻子變形，後來他的競爭對手常以此攻擊他。[4]
成名
[編輯]本·瓊生在1637年去世後，他在1638年接任桂冠詩人。他參與了保皇黨策劃的一場陰謀，意圖占領倫敦，於是在英格蘭內戰爆發前的1641年與約翰·薩克林一起被判叛國罪。他因此逃往法國[5]。戰爭爆發後他又返回英格蘭參戰，格洛斯特之圍後不久獲封騎士。 [6]
納西比戰役之後，他再度前往法國，在那裡開始創作史詩《Gondibert》。他在1649年被查爾斯二世任命為弗吉尼亞殖民地財務官，次年又被任命為馬里蘭副總督，但還沒到美洲就在海上被捕，隨後被判死刑。但可能是由於約翰·彌爾頓的搭救，他得以在倫敦塔苟且偷生。[6]
他在1652年獲釋，旋即出版《Gondibert》，不過他在1654年才正式宣告無罪。為了逃避當時對公共場合活動的嚴格審查，他將自己家的一個房間改建成了劇院「Rutland House」。1656年在這裡上演的《羅得之圍》（The Siege of Rhodes ）被視為歷史上第一部英語歌劇。[7]
1660年，他和托馬斯·基利格魯一起成為當時僅有的兩位獲國王特許經營劇院的人物[5]。1668年，他在倫敦逝世，葬於威斯敏斯特修道院的詩人角。
