此列表为列出目前国际间利用水坝阻挡水流来进行电力生产的惯常式水电站。该列表主要涵盖了商转中装置容量大于1,000 MW 以及正在兴建中的惯常式水电站。而装置容量小于 1,000 MW以及正在规划中的惯常式水电站则列在页尾中的地区列表中。

截至2013年,国际间装置容量最大的惯常式水电站是中国长江三峡大坝,其总装置容量额定功率最高为22,500 MW。而位在巴西巴拉圭交界的伊泰普水坝是一座装置容量高达14,000 MW的惯常式水电站,曾在2007年12月7日被评为当时世上建造最大的水力发电设施,该水坝高181米(594英尺),全长2,335米(7,661英尺),以及宽115米(377英尺)。发电厂内共装置额定输出为700 MW的32部水轮机,并且其中用来供应发电厂本身内部装置的2部水轮机的额定输出为50 MW,伊泰普水坝于1994年开始动工兴建,于2012年完工商转发电,期间将近耗费20年的时间来施工兴建。 排在三峡大坝之后的三座大型惯常式水电站为伊泰普水坝水电站,古丽水坝水电站以及图库鲁伊水坝英语Tucurui Dam水电站,其装置容量额定输出功率分别为14,000 MW,10,200 MW以及8,370 MW。上述中的四座水坝分别是日本柏崎刈羽核能发电厂(装置容量:8,212 MW)商转之前最大的不可再生能源发电设施。而目前在刚果计划兴建的大因加水电站其装置容量将高过中国三峡大坝将近两倍来到39,000 MW,将会超越当前三峡大坝装置容量的22,500 MW
