"THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF NEW SOUTH WALES IN SESSION. Here we have a most interesting representation of the Legislative Council, or Upper House of the Parliament, of New South Wales. The Council consists of sixty-four members appointed for life by the Crown. It is remarkable that in every British State a "Second Chamber" has been established, and has maintained its position with the general assent of all persons concerned. The President of the Council, the Hon. Sir John Lackey, K.C.M.C, is in the Chnir. Among the members present may be distinguished on the right of the Chair the Hon. Andrew Garran, Vice-President, and on the left the Hon. A. H. Jacob. Chairman of Committee. Many other well-known members will be recognised by those acquainted with Sydney life. The officers present, including the "Clerk of Parliaments" and the Usher of the Black Rod, recall the ancient traditions of the House of Lords." |
