The first generation Galant was built from 1969-73, it was available in 2 door coupe, 4 door sedan and wagon. From 1970, a fastback coupé model was developed, the Galant GTO. It got its styling from the American muscle cars; long hood, raised cut-off ducktail rear, and rounded quad-headlamps and tail-lamps. Initially, there were 3 models offered, all powered by the 1597cc Saturn engine: the M1 (1600 cc SOHC, 4-speed), M2 (1600 cc SOHC, 4-speed) and the top-spec, this car, the MR (1600 cc twin-carb, DOHC five-speed) From 1972 capacity was increased to 1686cc, and in 1973 the 1995cc engine introduced. Models now were; the SL with single carb, GS-5 twin carb and GSR twin carb but got flared guards and a black-painted rear panel between the lights as well.
