English: Most of the Yami (Tao) people live in concentrated villages. The patrilineal groups are the fundamental operational units of irrigation systems and fishing. The water taro is planted by women, and fishing is men's job. Water taro and fish are the staple food. Yami (Tao) culture is closely connected with the marine environment. The Yami (Tao) people have unique skills of making boats. Their yearly schedule and rituals correspond to the flying fish catching season. There are complicated taboos restricting which fish can be eaten by certain gender and age. |
